Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these medications should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
