Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
